From Camper to Champion — What Sports Teaches Us Beyond the Game

July 16, 2026

Long before Jordan Wolf lifted two NCAA championship trophies at Duke, before he wore the Team USA jersey or played eight seasons of professional lacrosse, he was a kid at ESF camp; trying new things, making friends, and learning lessons he wouldn’t fully understand until decades later.

In Episode 4 of Living MaxJoy, ESF Co-Founder Michael Rouse sits down with Jordan to explore the through-line from those summer days to championship locker rooms, and what every parent of a young athlete can take from his journey.

Ask Jordan about his earliest ESF memories and he doesn’t lead with sports. He talks about the counselors and coaches who believed in him, the friendships that made him want to come back year after year, and the confidence that grows when kids feel safe to try, fail, and try again. Camp gave him something organized sports alone couldn’t: a place where the joy came first, and the growth followed naturally.

One of the most valuable takeaways for parents is Jordan’s perspective on early specialization. Despite becoming one of the most accomplished players in NCAA lacrosse history, Jordan credits his success in part to being a multi-sport athlete growing up. Playing everything built the athleticism, adaptability, and love of competition that a single-sport often can’t.

It’s a theme we return to often at ESF, and Jordan’s story brings it to life. The championships everyone saw were built on thousands of hours no one did; early mornings, hard sacrifices, and setbacks that became his greatest teachers. Jordan is candid about failure, about the difference between confidence and arrogance, and about how elite performers stay steady when things get hard.

From high school to Duke to Team USA, Jordan watched his leadership style evolve, and he’s clear about what teammates actually trust: accountability, consistency, and showing up for others. These aren’t traits reserved for team captains. They’re habits any young person can start building today, at camp, in the classroom, and at home.
