Achieving Success through Failure

03.23.2018

On March 17, 2018, at the “Best for Boys Speaker Series,” at The Haverford School, our very own Executive Director & Co-Founder Michael Rouse, introduced Paul Assaiante, Trinity College squash coach and winningest coach in college sports history.

Mr. Assaiante gave an inspiring talk about “Achieving Success Through Failure,” which included tips on how to celebrate children and encourage them to become the best possible versions of themselves. He also stressed the importance of allowing children to experience small failures now, so that they don’t make monumental mistakes later in life.
Here Are Key Lessons From the Talk:
  • Run to the roar. Teach your children to go towards their fears.
  • Embrace the awesome power of now. We all need to live every day like our hair is on fire. Every day is a gift not to be squandered.
  • Let your children have seasons. Expose them to many things, and let THEIR passions determine what direction to focus on.
  • Always go back to the beginning. What was your initial goal for your child? It was basic, and simple, and altruistic. Don’t lose focus of that.
  • Let your children fail. It is only through failure that learning occurs.

We wanted to thank Mr. Assaiante for such a great presentation! If you’re interested in hearing more, you can watch the full conversation here.
